PREDICTION – SAINTS BY 9

LONDON IRISH

When London Irish have been on-song this season, it has tended to be at home.

The Exiles have been well-beaten by Sale Sharks and Bath on the road in recent weeks, and with Saints having rediscovered their winning ways at Franklin’s Gardens, after a fallow 2020, this could be another fruitless journey for the men from Brentford.

True enough, London Irish won 20-16 at Saints last season. But Saints had to play the last half-an-hour with 14 men on that occasion due to Api Ratuniyarawa’s red card. Even then, Irish had to rely on a last-minute try from Dave Porecki to get the job done.

Anyhow, not much can be read into that game as both teams are largely unrecognisable from the ones that took to the field 15 months ago. In the Saints XV, only Teimana Harrison remains from the pack but is playing at No.8 instead of openside, while Ollie Sleightholme and Piers Francis are the only backs to survive.

For Irish, five players are present from the 2020 clash with James Stokes switching from full-back to outside centre, to play alongside another ‘returnee’ in Terence Hepetema, and Ollie Hassell-Collins lines up again on the wing.

Blair Cowan, who makes his 150th appearance for Irish at the Gardens tonight, and Albert Tuisue were both in the pack. Those two make for a formidable force in the back row but with the likes of Agustin Creevy, Sean O’Brien, Curtis Rona and Theo Brophy-Clews missing, the Exiles look a little banged up.

London Irish’s last six games in all tournaments have all gone the way of home field advantage and Saints should have enough about them to cover the six-point handicap offered by skybet at 8/13.

PREDICTION -CHIEFS BY 14

WASPS

Wasps beat Exeter 34-5 at the Ricoh Arena on 2 January and have never achieved a season’s Premiership double over the Devonians. Very few people expect that to change this weekend, including the bookies who have the Chiefs down as nine-point favourites.

Both teams go into the match hurting from European heartache, the Chiefs losing their crown at home to Leinster whilst Wasps also relinquished the lead to lose in the last minute to Clermont in Coventry.

Rob Baxter has spoken this week about using that defeat as a driver for the seven rounds that remain in the Premiership, and while Wasps will be equally determined to bounce back, the Devonians have the greater incentive to produce a match-winning performance.

Second in the table but with just three points seperating themselves from the Sharks in third, the Chiefs know that a home semi-final spot could be taken away from them if they allow their Six Nations hangover to linger on.

Wasps, on the other hand, are out of the equation in 10th and seemingly with little to play for. That could free them up mentally and the return of Alfie Barbeary to their bench is a major boost, but it is doubtful Wasps have the armoury to stop the Chiefs when they get the between their teeth in the 22.

PREDICTION – SHARKS BY 10

GLOUCESTER RUGBY

Using La Rochelle as a yardstick, Gloucester would be marginal favourites for this clash.

The Cherry & Whites lost to the Top 14 side by 11 points in the Heineken Champions Cup Round of 16 tie at Kingsholm, while the Sharks went down 45-21 in southwest France a week later.

But the Sharks, in third, are eight places and 21 points better off than the visitors in the league table and have the game – and spirit – to quell any thoughts Gloucester have of springing a surprise.

Recently, AJ MacGinty spoke of the sense of ‘brotherhood’ in the Sharks’ squad and that, together with the mental and physical resilience of their large South African contingent makes them worthy eight-point favourites.

Sale Sharks: 15. Luke James, 14. Arron Reed, 13. Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 12. Sam James, 11. Marland Yarde, 10. Robert du Preez, 9. Faf De Klerk (Capt.); 1. Ross Harrison, 2. Akker van der Merwe, 3. Coenie Oosthuizen, 4. Cobus Wiese, 5. Jean-Pierre du Preez, 6. Jean-Luc du preez, 7. Tom Curry, 8. Daniel du Preez.
Replacements: 16. Curtis Langdon, 17. Valery Morozov, 18. James Harper, 19. James Phillips, 20. Cameron Neild, 21. Will Cliff, 22. AJ MacGinty, 23. Simon Hammersley.

Gloucester: 15. Santiago Carreras, 14. Louis Rees-Zammit, 13. Chris Harris, 12. Mark Atkinson, 11. Jonny May, 10. George Barton, 9. Charlie Chapman; 1. Val Rapava-Ruskin, 2. Jack Singleton, 3. Fraser Balmain, 4. Ed Slater, 5. Alex Craig, 6. Jack Clement, 7. Lewis Ludlow (c), 8. Ruan Ackermann.

PREDICTION – QUINS BY 16

worcester-warriors-logo

WORCESTER WARRIORS

Warriors are on a 12-match losing run in the Premiership dating back to a narrow win over London Irish in November. In their most recent two defeats to Bath and Northampton, they have conceded over 100 points and Quins will be looking to pile on the misery in an attempt to enhance their play-off prospects even further.

The bottom-of-the-table Warriors’ line-up looks stronger than it has done for some time, with Francois Hougaard and Ollie Lawrence in the backs and Ted Hill and Matt Kvesic in the back-row, but the losing run will have taken its toll on confidence.

As a team very familiar with one another and full of attacking intent, Quins should rack up quite a few points but also concede some on a day when the spring-like conditions will suit an open game.

Our recommendation is to go Quins +37.5 points (8/11).

Harlequins: 15. Mike Brown, 14. Tyrone Green, 13. Joe Marchant, 12. Andre Esterhuizen, 11. Cadan Murley, 10. Marcus Smith, 9. Danny Care, 1. Joe Marler, 2. Scott Baldwin, 3. Wilco Louw, 4. Matt Symons, 5. Dino Lamb, 6. Tom Lawday, 7. Will Evans, 8. Alex Dombrandt (c).

Replacements: 16. Joe Gray, 17. Jordan Els, 18. Will Collier, 19. Hugh Tizard, 20. Jack Kenningham, 21. Martin Landajo, 22. Brett Herron, 23. Luke Northmore.

Worcester: 15. Jamie Shillcock, 14. Perry Humphreys, 13. Ollie Lawrence, 12. Francois Venter, 11. Alex Hearle, 10. Billy Searle, 9. Francois Hougaard, 1. Ethan Waller, 2. Niall Annett, 3. Nick Schonert, 4. Joe Batley, 5. Graham Kitchener, 6. Ted Hill (c), 7. Matt Kvesic, 8. GJ van Velze.

Replacements: 16. Isaac Miller, 17. Marc Thomas, 18. Richard Palframan, 19. Anton Bresler, 20. Tom Dodd, 21. Gareth Simpson, 22. Ashley Beck, 23. Harri Doel.

PREDICTION – BATH BY 6

LEICESTER TIGERS

Two sides whose confidence is riding high on the back of good runs in both the Gallagher Premiership and European Challenge Cup come together for a do-or-die game in terms of their play-off hopes.

Leicester are one place and one point better off than their hosts in seventh place with a win for either team guaranteeing them a top-half position come the end of Round 15.

With only seven games remaining after this, there is no margin for error and, given we’re approaching high stakes territory, both teams may have to fight for their points a little harder than at Welford Road earlier this season when the Tigers 36-31.

With Bath and Leicester having been involved in a series of high-scoring matches of late – the aggregate number of points from their last four fixtures is 64.25 points and 62.5 points, respectively – the total match points line is understandably high at 54.5 points, and we believe that to be about right.

Key to Leicester’s win last time out was George Ford’s impossible-to-deal-with ‘spiral bomb’ – Anthony Watson probably has nightmares still – Jasper Wiese’s hard carrying and the assurance of Freddie Seward at the back. Seward outplayed Watson hands down and the England full-back will have a point to prove today. He is a  generous 23/10 to be an anytime try-scorer with Paddy Power.

Bath raced into a 14-0 lead in Leicester back in January and tend to be a ‘busy’ first-half team, scoring 24 of their 40 league tries before the interval. Just under half of the 56 tries they have leaked came in the first 40, too.

Tigers score on average 1.2 first-half tries to Bath’s 1.7 but only conceded an average of 1.3 to the blue, black and whites’ 1.9. Steve Borthwick’s side are more inclined to build a score through the boot of Ford, with 21 of their 32 penalties kicked coming in this period.

Again, the first-half points line of 27.5 looks frustratingly accurate, so our recommended bet – as well as the Watson punt – is for each team to score at least one try in each half (4/7, Paddy Power) and Bath to win by 6-10 points (5/1, various).

Bath: 15. Anthony Watson, 14. Joe Cokanasiga, 13. Jonathan Joseph, 12. Cameron Redpath, 11. Will Muir, 10. Josh Matavesi, 9. Ben Spencer; 1. Beno Obano, 2. Jack Walker, 3. Will Stuart, 4. Josh McNally, 5. Charlie Ewels ©, 6. Taulupe Faletau, 7. Sam Underhill, 8. Zach Mercer.
Replacements: 16. Jacques du Toit, 17. Juan Schoeman, 18. Henry Thomas, 19. Mike Williams, 20. Miles Reid, 21. Will Chudley, 22. Orlando Bailey, 23. Alex Gray

Leicester Tigers: 15 Freddie Steward, 14 Harry Potter, 13 Matías Moroni, 12 Dan Kelly, 11 Kini Murimurivalu, 10 George Ford, 9 Ben Youngs, 1 Ellis Genge, 2 Tom Youngs (c), 3 Dan Cole, 4 Harry Wells, 5 Calum Green, 6 George Martin, 7 Tommy Reffell, 8 Jasper Wiese.
Replacements: 16 Charlie Clare, 17 Luan de Bruin, 18 Joe Heyes, 19 Tomás Lavanini, 20 Luke Wallace, 21 Richard Wigglesworth, 22 Johnny McPhillips, 23 Matt Scott.
