Six Nations Preview: Top Try-Scorer

Yep, it’s the one you’ve all been waiting for.

And after last year’s success in tipping Damien Penaud, hopefully, we can deliver for you again, and at decent prices.

First up though, let’s remind ourselves of which players have topped the Six Nations finishers chart before.

2023 best bets

  • Damien Penaud, 8/1
  • Duhan van der Merwe, 18/1

Outside bet

  • Stuart Hogg, 50/1

Country specific

France: Damian Penaud, 5/2
Ireland: Mack Hansen, 3/1
England: Alex Dombrandt, 8/1
Wales: Josh Adams, 9/4
Scotland: Duhan van der Merwe, 13/8

French strike duo, Damien Penaud and Gabin Villiere, and Ireland’s James Lowe delivered the goods last year despite scoring a below-average three tries apiece.

Penaud, the top try-scorer across elite world rugby in 2022, and Villiere missed one game each and Lowe could even afford to miss two, but normally players have to be virtual ever-presents to be in contention.

Looking back over the past 12 months there are several players who appear to be certain of selection and it is hard to look past the 8/1 favourite PENAUD (Bet 365, Betway), but Scotland’s DUHAN VAN DER MERWE, (18/1 CORAL & LADBROKES) is likely to be right up there in contention. Team-mate Stuart Hogg (50/1 Boyle Sports) has shared the honour before and is always a threat.

Van der Merwe stormed in for five tries in 2021 and with Darcy Graham missing due to injury, Scotland will need their big man on the wing to be their deadly weapon and if it is not him scoring himself, Hogg is normally up with play sniffing opportunities that may come about because of van der Merwe’s sizeable presence.

Josh Adams (16/1 SKY BET) proved early on in his career, while at Worcester, that he doesn’t need to be in a successful team to score tries, and not many are tipping Wales to set the Championship alight even with Warren Gatland back at the helm.

The Cardiff speedster can finish with the best of them though, and only needs a sniff of a chance to finish.

At this stage, it is hard to predict which of the exciting runners at his disposal, Steve Borthwick will choose to deploy and it is unlikely that Ollie Hassell-Collins and Tommy Freeman will get enough minutes to trouble the top-end scorers.

For that reason, we’re looking elsewhere and Alex Dombrandt (8/1 William Hill, Betfred) looks like a better bet to be England’s top try-scorer.
