PREDICTION – CHIEFS BY 7

exeter-logo

EXETER CHIEFS

Since beating the Chiefs 20-7 down at Sandy Park at the start of January, Bristol haven’t looked back.

That victory took the Bears to the top of the Premiership table and they have remained there for the last 10 rounds.

Defending champions Exeter have been hit-and-miss during that time, the Six Nations having deprived them of some key players.

But in scoring 33 unanswered second-half points in last weekend’s emphatic victory against Wasps, Rob Baxter’s double champions sent out an emphatic statement that you write them off at your peril.

With Bristol having all but secured top spot in the league and the Chiefs still far from certain of a home semi-final – they only lead Sale by four points – the visitors have the greater incentive to do well on Friday night.

It is also hard to see the Chiefs shooting themselves in the foot as badly as they did last time out when they were guilty of conceding 17 turnovers and 19 penalties – stats that will have made Rob Baxter, the most stoical of men, weep.

Changes suits Chiefs

Also, when you look at the team sheets from the last meeting, several of the Bears players who played a starring role that day are missing from Friday’s line-up.

No.8 Nathan Hughes got through a mountain of work and made a match-best 16 carries and winger Ratu Naulago made good ground every time he touched the ball.

Nether of those two are playing, nor half-backs Harry Randall and Callum Sheedy, while Bristol are also missing the quality and threat of Harry Thacker, Ben Earl and Semi Radradra.

With Steven Luatua back to skipper the side on the blindside, that takes the number of returnees in the Bristol ranks to seven, albeit with Luke Morahan and Piers O’Conor swapping jerseys on the wing and in midfield, respectively.

Exeter have half-a-dozen survivors from the home defeat when Bristol scored 13 unanswered points in the second half, but the ones that have come in for the rematch are more than adequate replacements.

Ben Moon and Tomas Francis at prop, for Alec Hepburn and Harry Williams, does not weaken them one bit, while Jonny Gray for Will Witty only makes them stronger. Jacques Vermeulen wears seven instead of Don Armand and, again, the Chiefs do not suffer as a result.

In the backs, Jack Maunder takes on the scrum-half duties whereas it was Sam Hildalgo-Clyne who performed the task down in Devon.

In-form Tom O’Flaherty, one of the Chiefs’ star performers in the Champions Cup loss to Leinster, will frighten Bristol more than Ian Whitten, who played out of position last time around, while Jack Nowell will have the bit between his teeth, in place of Olly Woodburn, in his second game back from a long-term injury.

And as promising a player as Jack Walsh is at full-back, he cannot hold a light yet to Stuart Hogg.

All-in-all the Chiefs look much stronger than three months ago, while Bristol look weaker if anything.

Giving the Bears six points on the handicap (evens, BetVictor) won’t be enough to compensate in our opinion.

PREDICTION – QUINS BY 6

harlequins-logo

HARLEQUINS

London Irish have been involved in a few bonkers games since the turn of the year, and the last meeting between these sides in January certainly falls into that category.

Prop Oli Hoskins was the unlikely saviour for Irish, on his 10th appearance for the club, as the sides finished all-square at 27 points apiece.

In what was an end-to-end contest of attacking cut and thrust, Quins put themselves in a commanding position only to let Irish back into the game.

Very soon after, DoR Paul Gustard parted ways with the club. A disappointing loss to Newcastle aside, Quins have been very consistent without him at the helm, and with both sides prepared to give it a go, this should be another high-scoring encounter.

Danny Care becomes only the third player to play 300 Premiership games for Quins, after Mike Brown and Chris Robshaw, and is a generous 7/2 to cap the landmark achievement with a try.

The England scrum-half does not seem to have a care in the world right now, if you excuse the pun, and is playing some of the best rugby of his life.

London Irish: 15 Tom Parton, 14 Ben Loader, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 James Stokes, 11 Ollie Hassell-Collins, 10 Paddy Jackson, 9 Nick Phipps, 1 Facundo Gigena, 2 Agustin Creevy, 3 Ollie Hoskins, 4 George Nott, 5 Rob Simmons, 6 Matt Rogerson (c), 7 Blair Cowan, 8 Albert Tuisue

Replacements: 16. Joe Gray, 17. Jordan Els, 18. Will Collier, 19. Stephan Lewies, 20. Jack Kenningham, 21. Martin Landajo, 22. Will Edwards, 23. Luke Northmore

PREDICTION – GLOS BY 10

Newcastle_Falcons_logo

NEWCASTLE FALCONS

Backing Gloucester this season doesn’t come with any guarantees but you’d like to think with the team that they have got out, they should be able to put away the Falcons.

Newcastle’s resilience and togetherness brought them some wins early doors but Covid cancellations hit them hard, and once the playing field was levelled again post-Six Nations, they have suffered.

With Brent Connon’s goal-kicking not up to the levels, he’d like and Newcastle still searching for a try bonus point, it is hard to see them scoring enough points to overcome a Cherry & Whites side oozing with threats.

This a match where the real Gloucester needs to stand up.

Gloucester: 15. Kyle Moyle, 14. Louis Rees-Zammit, 13. Chris Harris, 12. Mark Atkinson, 11. Jonny May, 10. Lloyd Evans, 9. Stephen Varney; 1. Val Rapava-Ruskin, 2. Jack Singleton, 3. Fraser Balmain, 4. Ed Slater, 5. Alex Craig, 6. Jack Clement, 7. Lewis Ludlow (c), 8. Ruan Ackermann.

Replacements: 16. Santiago Socino, 17. Jamal Ford-Robinson, 18. Jack Stanley, 19. Matt Garvey, 20. Jordy Reid, 21. Willi Heinz, 22. Billy Twelvetrees, 23. Santiago Carreras

Newcastle Falcons: 15. Tom Penny, 14. George Wacokecoke, 13. Matias Orlando, 12. Luther Burrell, 11. Chidera Obonna, 10. Brett Connon, 9. Michael Young (c); 1. Trevor Davison, 2. George McGuigan, 3. PREDICTION – TIGERS BY 9

northampton-saints-logo

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

Nothing stirs the passions more than an east Midlands derby, and both sides will be up for this one.

Saints have the classier backs but will they get the ball? Leicester’s scrum worked well against Bath – a team that took Saints on upfront – so the visitors could be in for a hard day at the coalface.

Tigers also welcome back key names like Cyle Brink and Nemani Nadolo to the bench, while Kobus Van Wyk and Hanro Liebenberg boost the starting XV.

Welford Road is becoming a fortress again and we fancy Tigers to muscle their way to a 6-10 point victory.

Leicester Tigers: 15 Freddie Steward, 14 Kobus Van Wyk, 13 Matt Scott, 12 Dan Kelly, 11 Kini Murimurivalu, 10 George Ford, 9 Ben Youngs, 1 Ellis Genge, 2 Tom Youngs (c), 3 Dan Cole, 4 Harry Wells, 5 Calum Green, 6 Hanro Liebenberg, 7 Luke Wallace, 8 Jasper Wiese

Replacements: 16 Charlie Clare, 17 Luan de Bruin, 18 Joe Heyes, 19 Tomás Lavanini, 20 Cyle Brink, 21 Jack Van Poortvliet, 22 Zack Henry, 23 Nemani Nadolo

Northampton Saints: 15 George Furbank, 14 Matt Proctor, 13 Rory Hutchinson, 12 Piers Francis, 11 Ollie Sleightholme, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Alex Mitchell, 1 Alex Waller (co-capt), 2 Sam Matavesi, 3 Ehren Painter, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Alex Moon, 6 Tom Wood, 7 Lewis Ludlam (co-capt), 8 Teimana Harrison

Replacements: 16 Mike Haywood, 17 Nick Auterac, 18 Paul Hill, 19 Alex Coles, 20 Shaun Adendorff, 21 Tom James, 22 Ahsee Tuala, 23 Tommy Freeman

PREDICTION – SHARKS BY 14

sale-sharks-logo

SALE SHARKS

Warriors turned in a gutsy defensive display to come away with a losing bonus point from the AJ Bell back in January but the wheels have come off since then.

In the last three games, Worcester have conceded on average over 50 points per game and it appears the season’s end cannot come quickly enough for the Midlanders.

On the other hand, Sale are making week-on-week improvements under Alex Sanderson in most aspects of the game other than keeping 15 men on the park and having a real sense of togetherness about them.

They are also a humble bunch and will not take the warriors lightly, even though their hosts have not won an actual game on the pitch since squeezing home 11-10 against London Irish in Round 1.

Faf de Klerk and Marland Yarde have been rested and the Sharks still seem to have trouble putting sides away but they should win by two scores even so.

Worcester Warriors: 15. Jamie Shillcock, 14. Tom Howe, 13. Ollie Lawrence, 12. Francois Venter, 11. Alex Hearle, 10. Fin Smith, 9. Francois Hougaard, 1. Ethan Waller, 2. Niall Annett, 3. Nick Schonert, 4. Anton Bresler, 5. Andrew Kitchener, 6. Ted Hill (C), 7. Sam Lewis, 8. GJ van Velze.

Replacements: 16. Isaac Miller, 17. Marc Thomas, 18. Richard Palframan, 19. Justin Clegg, 20. Tom Dodd, 21. Matt Kvesic, 22. Gareth Simpson, 23. Harri Doel.

Sale Sharks: 15. Simon Hammersley, 14. Byron McGuigan, 13. Sam James, 12. Connor Doherty, 11. Arron Reed, 10. AJ MacGinty, 9. Will Cliff; 1. Bevan Rodd, 2. Curtis Langdon, 3. Will-Griff John, 4. Cobus Wiese, 5. Jean-Pierre du Preez, 6. Cameron Neild, 7. Tom Curry (c) 8. Daniel du Preez.

Replacements: 16. Ewan Ashman, 17. Valery Morozov, 18. Coenie Oosthuizen, 19. James Phillips, 20. JL du Preez, 21. Raffi Quirke, 22. Kieran Wilkinson, 23. Luke James
