PREDICTION – GLOS BY 4

bristol-bears-logo

BRISTOL BEARS

Gloucester have a golden opportunity to end a five-game losing run to West Country rivals Bristol, even though the visitors field what is effectively a full-strength pack and have the considerable skill of Semi Radradra available to them off the bench.

The Cherry & Whites are five places and nine points better off than their opponents in the table, but by their own admission, there is still a flakiness about them, and as a result, it is hard to back them with any confidence at 8/11.

Against this Gloucester defence, which concedes an average of 28 points per game, you’d fancy the Bears to break the 22.3-point ceilting set by Paddy Power (Evs).

Our prediction is that home advantage will just about hold sway in a high-scoring game that tops 50 points.

Gloucester Rugby: 15. Lloyd Evans, 14. Louis Rees-Zammit, 13. Chris Harris, 12. Mark Atkinson, 11. Ollie Thorley, 10. Adam Hastings, 9. Ben Meehan; 1. Val Rapava-Ruskin, 2. Jack Singleton, 3. Kirill Gotovtsev, 4. Freddie Clarke, 5. Matias Alemanno, 6. Ruan Ackermann, 7. Lewis Ludlow (c), 8. Ben Morgan

PREDICTION – SARRIES BY 5

SARACENS

Sandy Park isn’t the fortress it once and Saracens are in better nick than the Chiefs, so we are inclined to take Betfred’s 6/5 offer on an away win.

There is no love lost between the teams following the fallout from the salary cap saga and with both teams priding themselves on physicality, it is unlikely to be a free-flowing, high-scoring affair, even with numerous attacking talents in both line-ups.

William Hill are offering even money for less than 43 points.

Exeter Chiefs: 15 Stuart Hogg, 14 Jack Nowell, 13 Henry Slade, 12 Ian Whitten, 11 Tom O’Flaherty, 10 Joe Simmonds, 9 Jack Maunder; 1 Alec Hepburn, 2 Luke Cowan-Dickie, 3 Josh Iosefa-Scott, 4 Jonny Gray, 5 Jonny Hill, 6 Dave Ewers, 7 Don Armand, 8 Sam Simmonds

Replacements: 16 Jack Yeandle, 17 James Kenny, 18 Sam Nixon, 19 Richard Capstick, 20 Jannes Kirsten, 21 Sam Maunder, 22 Harvey Skinner, 23 Tom Hendrickson

Saracens: 15 Max Malins, 14 Alex Lewington, 13 Alex Lozowski, 12 Nick Tompkins, 11 Elliot Daly, 10 Alex Goode (cc), 9 Aled Davies; 1 Mako Vunipola, 2 Ethan Lewis, 3 Vincent Koch, 4 Maro Itoje, 5 Nick Isiekwe, 6 Jackson Wray (cc), 7 Ben Earl, 8 Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16 Kapeli Pifeleti, 17 Eroni Mawi, 18 Alec Clarey, 19 Tim Swinson, 20 Theo McFarland, 21 Andy Christie, 22 Ivan van Zyl, 23 Dom Morris

PREDICTION – IRISH BY 10

Newcastle_Falcons_logo

NEWCASTLE FALCONS

You write Newcastle off at your peril but Irish should have enough about them to win this one.

Declan Kidney has named a virtually unchanged team from the side that beat champions Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop last weekend, whereas Newcastle come down south with a rookie fly-half and a bench that looks infinitely weaker than the home side’s.

The Falcons will probably stay in the fight for a while but you’d expect Irish, who have had no problem scoring tries this season, to pull clear in the second 40.

Our advice would be to take the even money offer from Bet 365 on the second half being the highest-scoring half in the match. To back this up – how about this for a stat … London Irish have scored 23 second-half tries in the Premiership in 2021/22, no other team has scored more than 20 in that period of the game; the Exiles have scored 68% of their tries in the second half of games, also the highest ratio of any team in the league this term.

London Irish: 15 Tom Parton, 14 Kyle Rowe, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 Benhard van Rensburg, 11 Ollie Hassell-Collins, 10 Paddy Jackson, 9 Nick Phipps, 1 Will Goodrick-Clarke, 2 Agustin Creevy, 3 Ollie Hoskins, 4 Steve Mafi, 5 Rob Simmons, 6 Matt Rogerson (c), 7 Tom Pearson, 8 Olly Cracknell.

Replacements: 16 Mike Willemse, 17 Allan Dell, 18 Ciaran Parker, 19 George Nott, 20 Juan Martin Gonzalez, 21 Ben White, 22 Rory Jennings, 23 Matt Williams.

Newcastle: 15 Mike Brown, 14 Tom Penny, 13 Max Wright, 12 Luther Burrell, 11 Adam Radwan, 10 Will Haydon-Wood, 9 Louis Schreuder; 1 Adam Brocklebank, 2 George McGuigan, 3 Trevor Davison, 4 Greg Peterson, 5 Sean Robinson, 6 Philip van der Walt, 7 Gary Graham (captain), 8 Callum Chick.

Replacements: 16 Robbie Smith, 17 Logovi’i Mulipola, 18 Mark Tampin, 19 Rob Farrar, 20 Connor Collett, 21 Cameron Nordli-Kelemeti, 22 Brett Connon, 23 Pete Lucock.

PREDICTION – SAINTS BY 22

BATH RUGBY

Beating Exeter would have given Bath so much confidence but, as it is, they lost for the eighth time this season and the pressure on Stuart Hooper continues to intensify.

Hooper’s midfield resources have taken a hit and the inexperienced midfield pairing of Max Ojomoh and debutant Will Butt could be ruthlessly exposed by a Saints side capable of shredding better defences than Bath’s to shreds.

For us, there is only one winner and they are the ones in green, gold and black. Saints -12 is even money with Paddy Power, while Fraser Dingwall may not be a bad shout for an anytime try-scorer bet (100/30 with the same bookie) given the disconnect that Bath are likely to suffer in defence in the middle of the park, especially with speed bump defender Danny Cipriani inside the two young centres.

Northampton: 15 George Furbank, 14 Tommy Freeman, 13 Fraser Dingwall, 12 Rory Hutchison, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Alex Mitchell; 1 Alex Waller, 2 Sam Matavesi, 3 Ehren Painter, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Alex Moon, 6 Karl Wilkins, 7 Lewis Ludlam (C), 8 Juarno Augustus

Replacements: 16. James Fish, 17 Nick Auterac, 18 Paul Hill, 19 Api Ratuniyarawa, 20 Alex Coles, 21 Tom James, 22 Tom Litchfield, 23 Ollie Sleightholme

Bath: 15 Tom de Glanville, 14 Semesa Rokoduguni, 13 Will Butt, 12 Max Ojomoh, 11 Will Muir, 10 Danny Cipriani, 9 Ben Spencer; 1 Lewis Boyce, 2 Tom Dunn, 3 Will Stuart, 4 Josh McNally, 5 Charlie Ewels ©, 6 Tom Ellis, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Josh Bayliss

Replacements: 16 Jacques du Toit, 17 Will Vaughan, 18 D’Arcy Rae, 19 Mike Williams, 20 Richard de Carpentier, 21 Ewan Richards, 22 Ollie Fox, 23 Gabriel Hamer-Webb

PREDICTION – WORCS BY 4

wasps-logo

WASPS

Wasps have come away from their last three visits to Sixways with narrow victories but, on this occasion, it is reasonable to assume Worcester have a good chance of turning the tables on them.

Injury-ravaged Wasps have had a season to forget thus far with just three wins from eight games, and the cavalry can’t arrive soon enough.

While they are still one win and three places better off than the Warriors, the home side have more about them nowadays, especially as Steve Diamond has come in and kicked some butts.

History may be with Wasps, who have won their last 14 Premiership fixtures against Worcester since the Warriors 29-23 win at Sixways in March 2013, but with British and Irish Lions Rory Sutherland and Duhan van der Merwe, the Warriors will be a different proposition.

Worcester are 6/5 with SBK.

Warriors: 15 Jamie Shillcock, 14 Melani Nanai, 13 Francois Venter (CC), 12 Ashley Beck, 11 Duhan van der Merwe, 10 Fin Smith, 9 Gareth Simpson, 1 Rory Sutherland, 2 Niall Annett, 3 Christian Judge, 4 Matt Garvey, 5 Graham Kitchener, 6 Kyle Hatherell, 7 Ted Hill (CC), 8 Sione Vailanu.

Replacements | 16 Scott Baldwin, 17 Ethan Waller, 18 Jay Tyack, 19 Joe Batley, 20 Sam Lewis, 21 Will Chudley, 22 Billy Searle, 23 Ollie Lawrence.

Wasps: 15 Marcus Watson, 14 Zach Kibirige, 13 Alex McHenry, 12 Jimmy Gopperth, 11 Josh Bassett, 10 Jacob Umaga, 9 Will Porter, 1 Robin Hislop, 2 Dan Frost, 3 Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, 4 Vaea Fifita, 5 Elliott Stooke, 6 Brad Shields, 7 Thomas Young, 8 Tom Willis

Replacements: 16 Gabriel Oghre, 17 Tom West, 18 Elliot Millar-Mills, 19 Sebastian de Chaves, 20 Nizaam Carr, 21 Alfie Barbeary, 22 Sam Wolstenholme, 23 Matteo Minozzi

PREDICTION – TIGERS BY 8

harlequins-logo

HARLEQUINS

Hopefully, a match that will live up to all expectations as the unbeaten league leaders take on the defending champions at a sold-out Welford Road.

Inspired by the exploits of their defence coach, Kevin Sinfield, we expect the Tigers to go the extra mile and continue their winning run.

Quins have come unstuck against teams with an uber-aggressive defensive line speed before – losing to Sale and Saracens – and the Tigers will come at them with just as much intensity if not more, shutting down the time and space that the Quins backs love to exploit.

George Ford has little to prove to anyone but he’ll be extra determined to come out on top in his head-to-head with Marcus Smith.

That flyweight battle is just one of many exciting match-ups, which include, at the heavyweight end of the spectrum, what should be a seismic clash between Jasper Wiese and Alex Dombrandt at No.8.

Stand by for a classic!
