PREDICTION – QUINS BY 24

HARLEQUINS

Marcus Smith is a brilliant player, no doubt about it. But is he critical to Harlequins’ success? Looking at this season’s results in the Premiership, you’d have to say not.

Due to his surprise Lions call-up, England’s playmaker missed the start of the season and has only made five League starts – three of them wins, for a success rate of 60%.

And to be fair, that record could have easily been worse, with the wins over Gloucester (20-17) and Exeter (14-12) being achieved by less than a score, and in the case of the Chiefs game, in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Quins’ points-per-game average across those five games is just 20, while in the games that Smith did not start, that figure goes up to 32.

When Tommaso Allan and Will Edwards have been wearing 10, Qiuins have won five out seven (71%). So any Bath fans hoping that Smith’s absence will seriously negate the reigning champions prowess, need to think again.

Bath, by contrast, are down to their fifth-choice fly-half in Max Ojomoh. The backs isn’t really where the problem is, though. Upfront, they have what looks on paper to be a mid-table Championship pack and even without Alex Dombradt to contend with, it is hard to see them matching Quins’ physicality.

Over 53.5 points is our recommendation for a game that bears all the hallmarks of a one-sided, high-scoring encounter, and one that should fall comfortably in the visitors’ favour.

PREDICTION – CHIEFS BY 4

exeter-logo

EXETER CHIEFS

A big crowd their biggest in Brentford – and a big opportunity for Irish to slay a Chiefs side hit by England absentees.

Irish did pretty well in the Six Nations period last year, with three wins, three losses and a draw, and this could be a close one. we still think Chiefs will have the wherewithal to get the job done.

Irish are missing Ollie Hassell-Collins but the bulk of the side that has done so well of late is in place. Exeter have the backs to do some damage and they’ll probably bring an attacking intent to west London with them.

Irish have scored exactly 50 tries in their last 12 games so there should be a decent amount of points in the game, especially on a day when the rain is forecast to stay away.

London Irish: 15 James Stokes, 14 Ben Loader, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 Benhard van Rensburg, 11 Lucio Cinti, 10 Paddy Jackson, 9 Nick Phipps, 1 Will Goodrick-Clarke, 2 Matt Cornish, 3 Ollie Hoskins, 4 Rob Simmons, 5 Adam Coleman, 6 Matt Rogerson (c), 7 Tom Pearson, 8 Sean O’Brien.

PREDICTION – SAINTS BY 8

northampton-saints-logo

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

New Warriors DoR Steve Diamond said earlier in the week that it wouldn’t take long to turn the team into top-six material. A win here would certainly back up his belief that the ingredients are there for success.

The only way is up for Worcester and you can see why the bookies reckon this could go either way. Saints’ season has stalled, as they have a tendency to do, but they are normally fairly assured in putting away sides they are expected to beat, and the fact they put 60 on their opponents earlier in the season, should carry some merit.

Recommended bet: Saints to win (13/15, SBK)

Warriors: 15 Billy Searle, 14 Perry Humphreys, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Ashley Beck, 11 Duhan van der Merwe, 10 Fin Smith, 9 Gareth Simpson, 1 Rory Sutherland, 2 Niall Annett, 3 Christian Judge, 4 Joe Batley, 5 Andrew Kitchener, 6 Kyle Hatherell, 7 Ted Hill (C), 8 Matt Kvesic.

Replacements | 16 Isaac Miller, 17 Ethan Waller, 18 Jay Tyack, 19 Justin Clegg, 20 Sione Vailanu, 21 Will Chudley, 22 Owen Williams, 23 Alex Hearle.

Northampton Saints: 15 Ahsee Tuala, 14 Ollie Sleightholme, 13 Fraser Dingwall (c), 12 Rory Hutchinson, 11 Tom Collins, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Alex Mitchell, 1 Alex Waller, 2 Sam Matavesi, 3 Paul Hill, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Api Ratuniyarawa, 6 Tom Wood, 7 Teimana Harrison, 8 Juarno Augustus

Replacements: 16 James Fish, 17 Emmanuel Iyogun, 18 Conor Carey, 19 Brandon Nansen, 20 Alex Coles, 21 Tom James, 22 James Grayson, 23 Matt Proctor
