PREDICTION – QUINS BY 24

Newcastle_Falcons_logo

NEWCASTLE FALCONS

It is hard to see this being a triumphant return to the Twickenham Stoop for club legend Mike Brown.

His new club Newcastle haven’t won since they shocked Exeter down in Devon in November and are meandering their way to the bottom of the table. Only Worcester and Bath are preventing them from sinking that low.

The low-scoring Falcons do have a tendency to upset the odds every now and again but it is hard to see that happening against the defending champions who have rediscovered the winning habit in the last two games, especially as the visitors’ 23 has a very makeshift look about it.

Recommended bet: Quins -18 (10/11) and Newcastle <16.5 points (4/5)

Harlequins: 15 Tyrone Green, 14 Louis Lynagh, 13 Huw Jones, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Cadan Murley, 10 Tommy Allan, 9 Danny Care; 1 Joe Marler, 2 Sam Riley, 3 Wilco Louw, 4 Matt Symons, 5 Hugh Tizard, 6 Stephan Lewies (captain), 7 Tom Lawday, 8 Archie White

Replacements: 16 Jack Walker, 17 Simon Kerrod, 18 Will Collier, 19 George Hammond, 20 Matas Jurevicius, 21 Lewis Gjaltema, 22 Will Edwards, 23 Luke Northmore

Newcastle: 15 Mike Brown, 14 Tom Penny (captain), 13 George Wacokecoke, 12 Pete Lucock, 11 Adam Radwan, 10 Will Haydon-Wood, 9 Cameron Nordli-Kelemeti; 1 Trevor Davison, 2 George McGuigan, 3 Mark Tampin, 4 Greg Peterson, 5 Rob Farrar, 6 Sean Robinson, 7 Josh Basham, 8 Tom Marshall.

Replacements: 16 Charlie Maddison, 17 Adam Brocklebank, 18 Richard Palframan, 19 Will Montgomery, 20 Freddie Lockwood, 21 Louis Schreuder, 22 Brett Connon, 23 Max Wright.

PREDICTION – BRIS BY 4

bristol-bears-logo

BRISTOL BEARS

Buoyed by a rare away win at Newcastle and fortified by the presence of fit-again back-row trio, Josh Bayliss, Sam Underwood and Taulupe Faletau, there is a good chance that Bath can turn the tables on their nearest and dearest down the A4. However, there are still more arguments for an away win than a home one.

The Bath front-five is still an area of weakness and Danny Cipriani still looks suspect at 10 but at least Bath can count on prop Lewis Boyce and fly-half Orlando Bailey to make an impact if needed off the bench.

The worry for Bath is the lack of try-scoring threats in the backs. In the last five derbies, all won by Bristol, all but one of Bath’s 13 tries have been scored by backs so they need to deliver here.

However, Saturday’s back line is made up of players who are largely strangers to the whitewash. Jonathan Joseph has failed to score in the Premiership in over 30 matches, Cipriani is not far short of that mark either, Max Clark is not exactly prolific, Semesa Rokoduguni is not the same finisher he was three years ago and Will Butt has yet to score in six attempts. That leaves us with Tom de Glanville, who is more a creator of tries than a scorer, and scrum-half Ben Spencer.

Anytime try-scorer punters should probably look to the latter, as the former Saracens man is never afraid to back himself and give it a go when the time is right. Spencer is 21/10 to score a try with Paddy Power.

Bristol are understandably slight favourites but it’s a tough one to call in the Premiership rugby betting stakes.

Bath Rugby: 15 Tom de Glanville, 14 Semesa Rokoduguni, 13 Jonathan Joseph, 12 Max Clark, 11 Will Butt, 10 Danny Cipriani, 9 Ben Spencer; 1 Valeriy Morozov, 2 Tom Doughty, 3 D’Arcy Rae, 4 Mike Williams, 5 Ewan Richards, 6 Josh Bayliss ©, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Taulupe Faletau

Replacements: 16 Jacques du Toit, 17 Lewis Boyce, 18 Ma’afu Fia, 19 Will Spencer, 20 Jaco Coetzee, 21 Joe Simpson, 22 Orlando Bailey, 23 Joe Cokanasiga

Bristol Bears: 15. Ioan Lloyd; 14. Siva Naulago, 13. Semi Radradra, 12. Antoine Frisch, 11. Alapati Leiua; 10. Callum Sheedy, 9. Oscar Lennon; 1. Jake Woolmore, 2. Harry Thacker, 3. Jake Armstrong, 4. Dave Attwood, 5. Joe Joyce (c), 6. Chris Vui, 7. Jake Heenan, 8. Sam Jeffries

PREDICTION – GLOS BY 9

northampton-saints-logo

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

It’s time for Gloucester to get back on the horse and return to winnings ways after two tough losses against Leicester and Exeter.

Saints were slightly fortuitous to come away with the win against Sale at home, and while that result will have given them a much-needed confidence boost, there are still plenty of cracks for a quality Cherry & Whites backline to exploit.

The visitors have a poor record against teams above them in the table and we expect Gloucester to cover the seven-point handicap.

Gloucester: 15 Kyle Moyle, 14 Santiago Carreras, 13 Tom Seabrook, 12 Billy Twelvetrees, 11 Ollie Thorley, 10 Adam Hastings, 9 Ben Meehan, 1 Harry Elrington, 2 Santiago Socino,  3 Fraser Balmain,  4 Freddie Clarke,  5 Matias Alemanno, 6 Jordy Reid,  7 Jack Clement, 8 Ruan Ackermann (c)

Replacements: 16 Henry Walker, 17 Val Rapava-Ruskin, 18 Jamal Ford-Robinson, 19 Andrew Davidson, 20 Alex Craig, 21 Charlie Chapman, 22 George Barton, 23 Louis Rees-Zammit

Northampton Saints: 15 Rory Hutchinson, 14 Courtnall Skosan, 13 Matt Proctor, 12 Fraser Dingwall (c), 11 Tom Collins, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Alex Mitchell, 1 Emmanuel Iyogun, 2 Sam Matavesi, 3 Ehren Painter, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Api Ratuniyarawa, 6 Alex Coles, 7 Teimana Harrison,  8 Juarno Augustus,

PREDICTION – IRISH BY 12

worcester-warriors-logo

WORCESTER WARRIORS

Worcester are a tougher nut to crack under Steve Diamond and even for a side of Irish’s attacking ability, 16 points is a lot for them to cover on the handicap.

Instead, we like the look of Duhan van der Merwe as an anytime try-scorer (11/10, Paddy Power). The powerhouse Scotland wing looked almost unstoppable at times in last week’s win over Bristol, and if the Warriors can get him into the game more often, then the visitors will be right in the game.

With home advantage and the form they are in, Irish should win a relatively high-scoring game but maybe not by three scores as suggested in the Premiership rugby betting odds.

London Irish: 15 James Stokes, 14 Kyle Rowe, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 Benhard van Rensburg, 11 Lucio Cinti, 10 Paddy Jackson, 9 Nick Phipps (c), 8 Sean O’Brien, 7 Juan Martin Gonzalez, 6 Olly Cracknell, 5 Rob Simmons, 4 Chunya Munga, 3 Ollie Hoskins, 2 Agustin Creevy, 1 Facundo Gigena

Replacements: 16 Matt Cornish, 17 Allan Dell, 18 Marcel van der Merwe, 19 George Nott, 20 Albert Tuisue, 21 Ben White, 22 Phil Cokanasiga, 23 Henry Arundell

Worcester Warriors: 15 Noah Heward, 14 Perry Humphreys, 13 Seb Atkinson, 12 Ashley Beck, 11 Duhan van der Merwe, 10 Billy Searle, 9 Willi Heinz, 8 Sione Vailanu, 7 Ted Hill (c), 6 Joe Batley, 5 Andrew Kitchener, 4 Justin Clegg, 3 Christian Judge, 2 Isaac Miller, 1 Ethan Waller

Replacements: 16 Beck Cutting, 17 Murray McCallum, 18 Jack Owlett, 19 Jack Forsythe, 20 Matt Kvesic, 21 Gareth Simpson, 22 Fin Smith, 23 Alex Hearle

PREDICTION – SARRIES BY 6

leicester-tigers-logo

LEICESTER TIGERS

Leicester have won all three games when coming up against a side coming off the back of a rest week but this could be where that record ends.

Sarries won’t need any reminding about the circumstances in which they lost 13-12 at Welford Road earlier in the season and will be fired up and fresh from their week off.

A tight and tetchy, low-scoring affair looks in prospect, so we’re leaning towards the match points market rather than the handicap which has the home side down as seven-point favourites.

Under 48.5 points is our recommended bet (10/11, Paddy Power).

Saracens: 15 Elliot Daly, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Alex Lozowski, 12 Nick Tompkins, 11 Alex Lewington, 10 Alex Goode, 9 Aled Davies, 1 Mako Vunipola (c), 2 Tom Woolstencroft, 3 Vincent Koch, 4 Callum Hunter-Hill, 5 Tim Swinson, 6 Andy Christie, 7 Jackson Wray, 8 Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16 Ethan Lewis, 17 Richard Barrington, 18 Sam Wainwright, 19 Theo McFarland, 20 Ben Earl, 21 Ruben de Haas, 22 Duncan Taylor, 23 Rotimi Segun

Leicester Tigers: 15 Freddie Burns, 14 Harry Potter, 13 Matías Moroni, 12 Matt Scott, 11 Kini Murimurivalu, 10 George Ford (c), 9 Jack van Poortvliet,  James Whitcombe, 2 Nic Dolly, 3 Joe Heyes, 4 Eli Snyman, 5 Calum Green, 6 Ollie Chessum,  7 Tommy Reffell, 8 George Martin

Replacements: 16 Charlie Clare, 17 Francois van Wyk, 18 Nephi Leatigaga, 19 Harry Wells, 20 Jasper Wiese, 21 Richard Wigglesworth, 22 Guy Porter, 23 Nemani Nadolo

PREDICTION – SHARKS BY 6

sale-sharks-logo

SALE SHARKS

Sharks are excellent value at 7/5 (Paddy Power) to put last season’s disappointment behind them and win at Sandy Park.

The Sharks blew a 16-point lead to lose the Round 22 match against the Chiefs and were then beaten 40-30 a week later in the play-off semi-finals.

This time around, Sale are riding high on the back of a five-game winning run and have been able to freshen things up a little bit with the inclusion of Bevan Rodd at loose-head.

With Robert du Preez in the form of his life at 13 and young wingers, Tom Roebuck and Arron Reed flying, Sale have plenty of tries in them. They are also better equipped than most teams to deal with the Chiefs’ physicality.

Not one for the faint-hearted!

Exeter Chiefs: 15. Stuart Hogg, 14. Olly Woodburn, 13. Ian Whitten, 12. Tom Hendrickson, 11. Tom O’Flaherty, 10. Joe Simmonds, 9. Sam Maunder, 1. Alec Hepburn, 2. Jack Yeandle (C), 3. Marcus Street, 4. Jannes Kirsten, 5. Sam Skinner, 6. Dave Ewers, 7. Jacques Vermeulen, 8. Richard Capstick

Replacements: 16. Jack Innard, 17. James Kenny, 18. Harry Williams, 19. Will Witty, 20. Santiago Grondona, 21. Jack Maunder, 22. Harvey Skinner, 23. Facundo Cordero

Sale Sharks: 15. Sam James, 14. Tom Roebuck, 13. Robert du Preez, 12. Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 11. Arron Reed, 10. AJ MacGinty, 9. Raffi Quirke, 1. Bevan Rodd, 2. Ewan Ashman, 3. Coenie Oosthuizen, 4. Cobus Wiese, 5. Lood de Jager, 6. Jean-Luc du Preez, 7. Jono Ross (C), 8. Daniel du Preez

Replacements: 16. Curtis Langdon, 17. Simon McIntyre, 18. Joe Jones, 19. JP du Preez, 20. Ben Curry, 21. Faf de Klerk, 22. Luke James, 23. Byron McGuigan
