PREDICTION – Tigers by 10

leicester-tigers-logo

LEICESTER TIGERS

Two seasons ago Leicester were on the wrong end of a 46-20 scoreline at Kingsholm. But that was then and this is now. Only half-a-dozen Gloucester players from that match will start on Friday night, while rookie scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet is the only starter in the present Tigers’ line-up to have endured that defeat.

The following season Leicester, by now under the watchful eye of Steve Borthwick, ground out a 20-14 that was much more of their master’s making, and judging by their victory over Exeter in Round 1 they will continue on an upward trajectory.

All the nuts and bolts of what makes a good team were present against the Chiefs: a good set-piece, fast defensive line speed, game-changing half-backs and a full-back who is not only solid under the high ball but can threaten in in attack too. Freddie Steward and any number of players could have won tbe man of the match award that was handed to George Martin.

As for Gloucester, it is still anyone’s guess which way they will go. Dropping off a third of their tackles in the Round 1 defeat to Northampton didn’t support any claims from the Cherry & Whites camp that they are close to clicking and the Shed might not get the return to watching live action that they were hoping for.

Recommended bet: Leicester -3 (10/11)

Gloucester Rugby: 15 Kyle Moyle, 14 Tom Seabrook, 13 Billy Twelvetrees, 12 Mark Atkinson, 11 Ollie Thorley, 10 Lloyd Evans, 9 Ben Meehan; 1 Harry Elrington; 2 Jack Singleton, 3 Fraser Balmain, 4 Ed Slater, 5 Andrew Davidson, 6 Ben Morgan, 7 Lewis Ludlow (c), 8 Ruan Ackermann

Replacements: 16 Henry Walker, 17 Jamal Ford-Robinson, 18 Kirill Gotovtsev, 19 Freddie Clarke, 20. Wian Conradie, 21 Jack Clement, 22 Stephen Varney, 23 Adam Hastings

PREDICTION -FALCONS BY 12

Newcastle_Falcons_logo

NEWCASTLE FALCONS

The Rec holds no fears for the Falcons who have won on two of their last three visits including on the opening weekend last season when they were newly promoted from the Championship.

The Bath team they face this weekend should hold no fears for them either, especially with the home side’s key half-back duo, Ben Spencer and Danny Cipriani, out injured.

Indeed, it is hard to recall a Bath team that looked so weak and callow on paper – at nine and 10 and in the front row – and the Falcons, whilst beaten at home to the champions Harlequins last weekend, can take plenty of positives out of their performance and can be backed to take another step forward this weekend.

Bath: 15 Tom de Glanville, 14 Semesa Rokoduguni, 13 Jonathan Joseph, 12 Max Ojomoh, 11 Will Muir, 10 Orlando Bailey, 9 Ollie Fox; 1 Juan Schoeman, 2 Tom Dunn, 3 Johannes Jonker, 4 Mike Williams, 5 Charlie Ewels ©, 6 Miles Reid, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Josh Bayliss

Replacements: 16 Jacques du Toit, 17 Beno Obano, 18 D’Arcy Rae, 19 Tom Ellis, 20 Jaco Coetzee, 21 Max Green, 22 Will Butt, 23 Max Clark

Newcastle Falcons: 15 Tom Penny, 14 Adam Radwan, 13 Ben Stevenson, 12 Pete Lucock, 11 Iwan Stephens, 10 Will Haydon-Wood, 9 Louis Schreuder; 1 Adam Brocklebank, 2 George McGuigan, 3 Richard Palframan, 4 Greg Peterson, 5 Sean Robinson, 6 Philip van der Walt, 7 Will Welch (captain), 8 Carl Fearns.

Replacements: 16 Jamie Blamire, 17 Kyle Cooper, 18 Mark Tampin, 19 Marco Fuser, 20 Gary Graham, 21 Cameron Nordli-Kelemeti, 22 Brett Connon, 23 George Wacokecoke.

PREDICTION – CHIEFS BY 9

northampton-saints-logo

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

Chiefs are still by injuries and unavailabilities but should still be too good for a Saints side that was run relatively close by a poor Gloucester outfit last weekend. Chiefs won’t fall off as many tackles as Gloucester even when they’re without some of their big guns.

However, early-season rustiness may lead to them falling under 30 points, the mark set by Paddy Power in the Team Points market. Looking at last season’s results at Sandy Park, Rob Baxter’s side were definitely slow burners, failing to reach 30 points in five out of their first six fixtures there, whereas they managed it in four of their last five.

Recommended bet: Chiefs <29.5 points (4/5, Paddy Power)

Exeter Chiefs: 15 Josh Hodge, 14 Facundo Cordero, 13 Henry Slade, 12 Ollie Devoto, 11 Tom O’Flaherty, 10 Joe Simmonds, 9 Jack Maunder, 1 Alec Hepburn, 2 Jack Yeandle (capt), 3 Harry Williams, 4 Will Witty, 5 Sean Lonsdale, 6 Jannes Kirsten, 7 Don Armand, 8 Rus Tuima

Replacements: 16 Jack Innard, 17 Ben Moon, 18 Josh Iosefa-Scott, 19 Ryan McCauley, 20 Christ Tshiunza, 21 Sam Hidalgo-Clyne, 22 Harvey Skinner, 23 Ian Whitten

Northampton Saints: 15 George Furbank, 14 Ollie Sleightholme, 13 Matt Proctor, 12 Fraser Dingwall, 11 Tom Collins, 10 James Grayson, 9 Alex Mitchell; 1 Alex Waller, 2 Sam Matavesi, 3 Ehren Painter, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Api Ratuniyarawa, 6 Tom Wood, 7 Lewis Ludlam (c), 8 Teimana Harrison

Replacements: 16 James Fish, 17 Nick Auterac, 18 Paul Hill, 19 Alex Moon, 20 Juarno Augustus, 21 Frank Lomani, 22 Tom Litchfield, 23 Tommy Freeman

PREDICTION – QUINS BY 30

worcester-warriors-logo

WORCESTER WARRIORS

Quins’ last two home games against Worcester encapsulate the transformation of the side in such a short period of time. When Paul Gustard was in charge, they lost 19-14 at home to Worcester but then, 12 months later, when Billy Millard took command, the Londoners thrashed the Warriors 50-26. A scoreline more akin to the latter is expected today and -15 won’t be enough to stop Quins winning on the handicap.

Recommended bet: Quins -15 (10/11, Paddy Power)

Harlequins: 15. Tyrone Green, 14. Louis Lynagh, 13. Joe Marchant, 12. Andre Esterhuizen, 11. Cadan Murley, 10. Tommy Allan, 9. Danny Care; 1. Joe Marler, 2. Jack Walker, 3. Simon Kerrod, 4. Matt Symons, 5. Dino Lamb, 6. Tom Lawday, 7. Jack Kenningham, 8. Alex Dombrandt (C),

Replacements: 16. Sam Riley, 17. Fin Baxter, Will Collier, Hugh Tizard, 20. James Chisholm, 21. Scott Steele, 22. Huw Jones, 23. Luke Northmore

Warriors: 15 Jamie Shillcock, 14 Noah Heward, 13 Ollie Lawrence, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Perry Humphreys, 10 Owen Williams, 9 Willi Heinz (CC), 1 Ethan Waller, 2 Scott Baldwin, 3 Christian Judge, 4 Kyle Hatherell, 5 Justin Clegg, 6 Ted Hill (CC), 7 Sam Lewis, 8 Matt Kvesic.

Replacements: 16 Niall Annett, 17 Marc Thomas, 18 Jack Owlett, 19 Matt Garvey, 20 Graham Kitchener, 21 Will Chudley, 22 Billy Searle, 23 Melani Nanai.

PREDICTION – TBC

bristol-bears-logo

BRISTOL BEARS

This is such a tough one to call with both sides missing frontline players added to the fact that Wasps sat out Round 1.

Whether the extra week off will have done them good or count against them is impossible to tell but they will come up against a Bristol side smarting from their opening day defeat to Saracens.

The Bears found it hard to find their attacking rhythm against an aggressive defence and with Wasps also likely to take a while to get into their groove, this may not be the free-flowing classic that it would appear to be on paper.

Wasps: 15. Ali Crossdale, 14. Marcus Watson, 13. Malakai Fekitoa, 12. Michael Le Bourgeois, 11. Josh Bassett, 10. Jacob Umaga, 9. Dan Robson; 1. Robin Hislop, 2. Tom Cruse, 3. Jeff Toomaga-Allen, 4. Vaea Fifita, 5. Elliott Stooke, 6. Brad Shields, 7. Gabriel Oghre, 8. Tom Willis

Replacements: 16. Dan Frost, 17. Ben Harris, 18. Biyi Alo, 19. Tim Cardall, 20. Ben Morris, 21. Will Porter, 22. Jimmy Gopperth, 23. Zack Kibirige

Bristol Bears: 15. Charles Piutau; 14. Niyi Adeolokun, 13. Piers O’Conor, 12. Alapati Leiua, 11. Ioan Lloyd; 10. Callum Sheedy, 9. Andy Uren; 1. Yann Thomas, 2. Harry Thacker, 3. Max Lahiff, 4. Dave Attwood, 5. Chris Vui, 6. Steven Luatua (c), 7. Dan Thomas, 8. Nathan Hughes.

Replacements: 16. Will Capon, 17. Jake Woolmore, 18. Jake Armstrong, 19. Ed Holmes, 20. Jake Heenan, 21. Harry Randall, 22. Sam Bedlow, 23. Henry Purdy

Recommended bet: Match Points < 55.5 pts (10/11, Paddy Power)

PREDICTION – SHARKS BY 15

sale-sharks-logo

SALE SHARKS

New ground but the same outcome? We think so. Sale have won their last four games away to London Irish in the Premiership by an average margin of 15 points and they should be good to match that in Brentford today.

Yes, their new surroundings will give them a lift, as it did Brentford in yesterday’s 3-3 Premier League draw with Liverpool, but the Sharks are playing well above the Exiles’ level at present and are looking to increase their winning run in the league against the Exiles to nine matches, home or away.

Last week’s 20-19 win at home to Bath was far from perfect but Alex Sanderson has got such a good vibe going at the Sharks right now, they will head south full of confidence that they can do a number on their hosts and overcome the 3-point handicap.

Recommended bet: Sharks -3 (10/11)

London Irish: 15 Tom Parton, 14 Kyle Rowe, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 Terrence Hepetema, 11 Ollie Hassell-Collins, 10 Paddy Jackson, 9 Ben White; 1 Will Goodrick-Clarke, 2 Agustin Creevy, 3 Marcel van der Merwe, 4 Rob Simmons, 5 Adam Coleman, 6 Matt Rogerson (c), 7 Ben Donnell, 8 Albert Tuisue

Replacements: 16 Mike Willemse, 17 Allan Dell, 18 Ollie Hoskins, 19 George Nott, 20 Steve Mafi, 21 Sean O’Brien, 22 Hugh O’Sullivan, 23 Benhard van Rensburg

Sale Sharks: 15 Simon Hammersley, 14 Byron McGuigan, 13 Sam James, 12 Manu Tuilagi, 11 Marland Yarde, 10 AJ MacGinty, 9 Raffi Quirke; 1 Bevan Rodd, 2 Akker van der Merwe, 3 Nick Schonert, 4 Cobus Wiese, 5 JP du Preez, 6 Cameron Neild, 7 Ben Curry, 8 Jono Ross (c)

Replacements: 16 Tommy Taylor, 17 Ross Harrison, 18 Coenie Oosthuizen, 19 Rouban Birch, 20 Sam Dugdale, 21 Will Cliff, 22 Keiran Wilkinon, 23 Denny Solomona
