PREDICTION – BATH BY 1

BATH RUGBY

Two games into the season and both these teams are searching for their first wins. For Bath, that is not entirely unexpected given their mediocrity over a number of seasons, but for a Bristol side with designs on the title, defeats to Saracens and Wasps have left most people scratching their heads.

It was always going to be difficult for the Bears to accommodate the loss of Ben Earl and Max Malins back to Saracens but maybe it’s the departure of Siale Puitau and the continued absence of Semi Radradra that has hit them the hardest.

Bristol win three-quarters of their games when Radradra plays and only around half when he doesn’t. Meanwhile, Piutau has left his more celebrated brother, Charles, behind in the West Country after five brilliant seasons. His hard-running in midfield fixed the focus of defenders and created space out wide, which the Bears expertly capitalised on last season.

And even if they do give the ball some air at the moment, Radradra, Siva Naulaga and Luke Morahan aren’t around to finish off the opportunities, although Henry Purdy has been a good friend of The Rugby Tipster in delivering when we’ve backed him to make an impact in the past (5/4 anytime try-scorer).

Bath haven’t won in Bristol since 2008 but now might be as good a time as any as this is a meeting between two sides struggling for rhythm and also struggling for points. Going to Ashton Gate with a rookie half-back partnership isn’t ideal but one area of the game that has gone well for Bath but not Bristol, especially, is the scrum, and the sight of Beno Obano and Will Stuart at prop is reassuring even if Bristol have Kyle Sinckler back.

Bath have been slow starters this season, and have failed to score a point in the first 20, so backing the blue, black and whites on the half-time handicap may be profitable (+5, 5/6, Paddy Power).

With Bristol having only scored 17 points this season and Bath 32 (less than 20 on each occasion against Newcastle and Sale), the even-money from William Hill on the match producing less than 49 points is tempting. Bath traditionally feature in matches where the ball-in-play time is down on the league average (less than 30 minutes), which also limits scoring opportunities.

Bath: 15 Tom de Glanville, 14 Semesa Rokoduguni, 13 Jonathan Joseph, 12 Max Ojomoh, 11 Will Muir, 10 Orlando Bailey, 9 Ollie Fox; 1 Beno Obano, 2 Jacques du Toit, 3 Will Stuart, 4 Josh McNally, 5 Charlie Ewels ©, 6 Tom Ellis, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Josh Bayliss

Replacements: 16 Tom Dunn, 17 Lewis Boyce, 18 D’Arcy Rae, 19 Mike Williams, 20 Miles Reid, 21 Max Green, 22 Max Clark, 23 Anthony Watson

Bristol: 15. Charles Piutau; 14. Ioan Lloyd, 13. Piers O’Conor, 12. Sam Bedlow, 11. Henry Purdy; 10. Callum Sheedy, 9. Harry Randall; 1. Yann Thomas, 2. Will Capon, 3. Kyle Sinckler, 4. Ed Holmes, 5. Joe Joyce, 6. Chris Vui, 7. Jake Heenan, 8. Steven Luatua (c).

Replacements: 16. Jake Kerr, 17. Jake Woolmore, 18. Max Lahiff, 19. Fitz Harding, 20. Dan Thomas, 21. Andy Uren, 22. Antoine Frisch, 23. Alapati Leiua.

PREDICTION -SAINTS BY 14

LONDON IRISH

With two wins behind them, including the scalp of Exeter down at Sandy Park, and the return of Lions duo Dan Biggar and Courtney Lawes, Saints should be too strong for an Irish side that is still too hit-and-miss.

Chris Boyd picks from a position of strength with
Taqele Naiyaravoro is the only frontline player unavailable to him, and Saints have won 11 of their last 13 meetings with the Exiles.

But while we expect Saints to win by at least two scores, Irish over 15.5 points (4/5, Paddy Power) has caught our eye. The visitors scored 31 in drawing with Sale last week and 24 the week before in going down to Worcester, and clearly have plenty of points in them.

Declan Kidney’s side played their full part in a 70-pointer won by Saints at Franklin’s Gardens last season and have the threats to disturb a Saints defence that is still prone to dropping off tackles.

Saints could go big too, and the 6/1 being offered by Paddy Power for them to win the race to 40 points is tempting. Over 4.5 tries in the match is available at a best-priced 10/11 with Boyle Sports.

Northampton: 15 George Furbank, 14 Ollie Sleightholme, 13 Matt Proctor, 12 Fraser Dingwall, 11 Tom Collins, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Alex Mitchell, 1 Nick Auterac, 2 Sam Matavesi, 3 Paul Hill, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Api Ratuniyarawa, 6 Tom Wood, 7 Lewis Ludlam (capt), 8 Juarno Augustus

Replacements: 16 James Fish, 17 Alex Waller, 18 Ehren Painter, 19 Alex Coles, 20 Courtney Lawes, 21 Teimana Harrison, 22 Frank Lomani, 23 Tommy Freeman

London Irish: 15 Tom Parton, 14 Ben Loader, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 Benhard van Rensburg, 11 Ollie Hassell-Collins, 10 Paddy Jackson, 9 Nick Phipps, 1 Will Goodrick-Clarke, 2 Agustin Creevy, 3 Ollie Hoskins, 4 Rob Simmons, 5 Adam Coleman, 6 Matt Rogerson (c), 7 Ben Donnell, 8 Albert Tuisue.

Replacements: 16 Matt Cornish, 17 Allan Dell, 18 Marcel van der Merwe, 19 George Nott, 20 Steve Mafi, 21 Sean O’Brien, 22 Ben White, 23 Matt Williams.

PREDICTION – SARRIES BY 3

saracens-logo

SARACENS

This has the fell of a real heavyweight clash as the resurgent Tigers face their stiffest test to date.

Saracens picked up where they left off against Bristol in Round 1 and welcome Owen Farrell back into a side already oozing with talent and caps.

With the defensive line speed of both teams being right up there with the best, space and tries will be hard-won, hence the low total match points mark of 38.5.

Expect Farrell to test out the Tigers’ new-look back-three, particularly Freddie Burns who starts ahead of Freddie Steward at full-back, a decision which must be rotation-based and not down to form, because Steward has been sensational.

In a game of fine margins that could go either way, backing Tigers at +5 might be the bet.

Leicester Tigers: 15 Freddie Burns, 14 Kobus van Wyk, 13 Guy Porter, 12 Dan Kelly, 11 Hosea Saumaki, 10 George Ford, 9 Ben Youngs, 1 Francois van Wyk, 2 Nic Dolly, 3 Dan Cole, 4 Calum Green, 5 Ollie Chessum, 6 George Martin, 7 Tommy Reffell, 8 Hanro Liebenberg (c)

Replacements: 16 Tom Cowan-Dickie, 17 Ellis Genge, 18 Nephi Leatigaga, 19 Harry Wells, 20 Cameron Henderson, 21 Jack van Poortvliet, 22 Juan Pablo Socino, 23 Freddie Steward

Saracens: 15 Max Malins, 14 Alex Lewington, 13 Alex Lozowski, 12 Nick Tompkins, 11 Rotimi Segun, 10 Owen Farrell (c), 9 Aled Davies, 1 Ralph Adams-Hale, 2 Jamie George, 3 Marco Riccioni, 4 Nick Isiekwe, 5 Tim Swinson, 6 Jackson Wray, 7 Ben Earl, 8 Billy Vunipola

Replacements: 16 Tom Woolstencroft, 17 Eroni Mawi, 18 Alec Clarey, 19 Callum Hunter-Hill, 20 Andy Christie, 21 Joe Simpson, 22 Alex Goode, 23 Dom Morris

PREDICTION – FALCONS BY 5

WASPS

A firm artificial track and back-three players bang on form, this should be an entertaining clash that the Falcons will have targeted to win.

Adam Radwan is flying at the moment and is 13/8 as an anytime try-scorer but perhaps the value lies in Wasps full-back, Ali Crossdale, who was man-of-the-match in scoring two tries against Bristol in round two.

Wasps quickly conceded that their 44-8 battering of Bristol flattered them and they’ll come up against a Falcons side that won’t yield as easily as the Bears did in Coventry. Newcastle to build on their win at Bath at 5/4 (William Hill) is our pick in what is likely to be another tight encounter.

The stats support arguments for the first half to be the highest-scoring half in the match (11/10, Skybet). Newcastle Falcons have scored 80% of their points in the first half of games this season (32 of 40), while Wasps did not concede a single second-half point in their only game of the season to date.

Newcastle Falcons: 15. Tom Penny, 14. Adam Radwan, 13. Ben Stevenson, 12. Pete Lucock, 11. Nathan Earle, 10. Will Haydon-Wood, 9. Louis Schreuder; 1. Adam Brocklebank, 2. George McGuigan, 3. Mark Tampin, 4. Marco Fuser, 5. Philip van der Walt, 6. Callum Chick, 7. Will Welch (captain), 8. Carl Fearns.

Replacements: 16. Jamie Blamire, 17. Kyle Cooper, 18. Trevor Davison, 19. Will Montgomery, 20. Gary Graham, 21. Cameron Nordli-Kelemeti, 22. Brett Connon, 23. George Wacokecoke.

Wasps: 15. Ali Crossdale, 14. Marcus Watson, 13. Sam Spink, 12. Jimmy Gopperth, 11. Josh Bassett, 10. Jacob Umaga, 9. Dan Robson; 1. Robin Hislop, 2. Tom Cruse, 3. Jeff Toomaga-Allen, 4. Vaea Fifita, 5. Elliot Stooke, 6. Brad Shields (captain), 7. Gabriel Oghre, 8. Tom Willis

Replacements: 16. Dan Frost, 17. Tom West, 18. Biyi Alo, 19. Tim Cardall, 20. Ben Morris, 21. Will Porter, 22. Will Simonds, 23. Zach Kibirige

PREDICTION – WORC BY 9

GLOUCESTER RUGBY

An M5 derby where Worcester have held sway in recent years, losing just one of their nine home games against the Cherry & Whites.

Given the respective starts of the sides, it is surprising to see the Warriors only be cast as one-point favourites. Alan Solomons side have never had seven points from their first two rounds before, and the win over London Irish and the battling defeat at Harlequins was done playing attractive rugby.

Warriors bagged try bonus points in each and could quite easily make it three out of three, and match last season’s tally for the entire season in the process, against a Gloucester side struggling to find an identity despite the best efforts of stirring captain Lewis Ludlow.

The chemistry between new Worcester signings Willi Heinz and Owen Williams is there for all to see and the experienced half-back duo will be well up for this clash against their former club.

it could get worse before it gets better for Gloucester. We reckon the try tally will go over 4.5 (10/11 Boyle Sports. Meanwhile, Worcester Warriors (-3.5) & Over (43.5) points is 100/30 with Paddy Power.

Warriors: 15 Jamie Shillcock, 14 Noah Heward, 13 Ollie Lawrence, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Melani Nanai, 10 Owen Williams, 9 Willi Heinz (CC), 1 Ethan Waller, 2 Scott Baldwin, 3 Christian Judge, 4 Matt Garvey, 5 Justin Clegg, 6 Ted Hill (CC), 7 Sam Lewis, 8 Matt Kvesic.

Replacements: 16 Niall Annett, 17 Marc Thomas, 18 Jack Owlett, 19 Kyle Hatherell, 20 Sione Vailanu, 21 Will Chudley, 22 Billy Searle, 23 Oli Morris.

Gloucester: 15. Jason Woodward, 14. Jonny May, 13. Billy Twelvetrees, 12. Mark Atkinson, 11. Ollie Thorley, 10. Adam Hastings, 9. Ben Meehan; 1. Harry Elrington, 2. Jack Singleton, 3. Kirill Gotovtsev, 4. Freddie Clarke, 5. Andrew Davidson, 6. Ruan Ackermann, 7. Lewis Ludlow (c), 8. Ben Morgan

Replacements: 16. Henry Walker, 17. Val Rapava-Ruskin, 18. Jamal Ford-Robinson, 19. Freddie Thomas, 20. Jack Clement, 21. Stephen Varney, 22. Lloyd Evans, 23. Chris Harris

PREDICTION – SHARKS BY 4

exeter-logo

EXETER CHIEFS

Exeter are something of a bogey team for the Sharks but, based on current form, you’d back Alex Sanderson’s side to extend their record winning run at home in the Premiership to nine matches. The Sharks have conceded fewer than 20 points in six of those previous eight home games.

You can pick holes in the selections of both teams, as neither are what you would call full strength, so this isn’t home banker territory at any stretch.

Sale Sharks: 15. Denny Solomona, 14. Tom Roebuck, 13. Rohan Janse van Rensburg, 12. Sam Hill, 11. Marland Yarde, 10. Rob du Preez, 9. Will Cliff; 1. Ross Harrison, 2. Curtis Langdon, 3. Nick Schonert, 4. Cobus Wiese, 5. J.P du Preez, 6. Cameron Neild, 7. Sam Dugdale, 8. Jono Ross (C).

Replacements: 16. Ewan Ashman, 17. Bevan Rodd, 18. Coenie Oosthuizen, 19. Rouban Birch, 20. Tommy Taylor, 21. Guss Warr, 22. Kieran Wilkinson, 23. Luke James.

Exeter Chiefs: 15 Stuart Hogg, 14 Facundo Cordero, 13 Henry Slade, 12 Ollie Devoto, 11 Tom O’Flaherty, 10 Harvey Skinner, 9 Jack Maunder; 1 Ben Moon, 2 Jack Yeandle (capt), 3 Josh Iosefa-Scott, 4 Will Witty, 5 Sean Lonsdale, 6 Dave Ewers, 7 Don Armand, 8 Richard Capstick

Replacements: 16 Jack Innard, 17 Alec Hepburn, 18 Harry Williams, 19 Ryan McCauley, 20 Christ Tshiunza, 21 Stu Townsend, 22 Joe Simmonds, 23 Tom Hendrickson
