PREDICTION – Chiefs by 6

EXETER CHIEFS

There have been dark clouds over The Rec all season in a metaphorical sense. But from a meteorological point of view, the damp, dark Friday evening that we have in store for tonight’s live BT Sport offering might be welcome news for the bottom-of-the-table and winless blue, black and whites in the sense the conditions could be a leveller.

That may be true against some sides but not Exeter. A night when the ball is going to be greasy and the wind plays havoc with the way the game is played dictates that the side that does its basics well will probably win, and nobody does their basics better than the Chiefs.

Both clubs have had an interesting build-up to this match, Bath using the break for the Prem Cup to review why they are performing so uselessly, while the Chiefs have held a board meeting about their controversial Native American branding.

Neither conclusion was particularly satisfying, with leaky Bath stating the obvious in saying they needed a defence coach to plug their defensive holes and the Chiefs putting out the briefest of statements saying they still hadn’t decided if Indian fancy dress was no longer appropriate attire.

Both seemed to have lost their way, on and off the pitch, Bath more than the Chiefs admittedly, and it is doubtful the rugby played – between two good teams on paper – will particularly warm the hearts. As such, we’re tempted to go under 44.5 points (10/11).

The Chiefs have won on four of their last five visits to The Rec and that trend should continue tonight, but only after they have done the hard yards first. It looks to be a night made for the maul, and visiting hooker Jack Yeandle, at 23/10, looks as good a bet as any to score a try.

PREDICTION – SAINTS BY 8

northampton-saints-logo

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

Saints send a seriously strong side to Ashton Gate as they go in search of their first win there since coming out on the right side of a high-scoring thriller in 2018.

Eight players involved with their international sides during the Autumn Nations Series return to the matchday squad this Friday night, including British & Irish Lions Dan Biggar and Courtney Lawes, whose confidence will be sky high following their respective wins for Wales and England last weekend.

Lawes, Dave Ribbans and Alex Moon make for a very decent lineout combination and Saints would like to apply plenty of pressure on Bristol in this area. Chris Vui returns to boost Bristol in the engine room but the home pack doesn’t look too menacing.

If they can win the lion’s share of set-piece possession, Saints certainly have the weapons to put points on the Bears and the 11/8 (Betvictor, Bet 365) on them winning the match looks good value.

Bristol Bears: 15. Charles Piutau; 14. Toby Fricker, 13. Piers O’Conor, 12. Alapati Leiua, 11. Henry Purdy; 10. Callum Sheedy, 9. Andy Uren; 1. Jake Woolmore, 2. Jake Kerr, 3. Max Lahiff, 4. Joe Joyce, 5. Chris Vui, 6. Sam Jeffries, 7. Jake Heenan (c), 8. Fitz Harding.

Replacements: 16. Will Capon, 17. Yann Thomas, 18. George Kloska, 19. John Hawkins, 20. Dan Thomas, 21. Tom Whiteley, 22. Sam Bedlow, 23. Niyi Adeolokun

Northampton Saints: 15 George Furbank, 14 Tommy Freeman, 13 Matt Proctor, 12 Fraser Dingwall, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Dan Biggar, 9 Alex Mitchell, 1 Alex Waller, 2 James Fish, 3 Paul Hill, 4 David Ribbans, 5 Alex Moon, 6 Courtney Lawes, 7 Lewis Ludlam (c), 8 Juarno Augustus

Replacements: 16 Sam Matavesi, 17 Emmanuel Iyogun, 18 Conor Carey, 19 Api Ratuniyarawa, 20 Karl Wilkins, 21 Tom James, 22 Rory Hutchinson, 23 Josh Gillespie.

PREDICTION – WASPS BY 7

GLOUCESTER RUGBY

Wasps are turnover kings of the Premiership, and with a back-row of Brad Shields, Thomas Young and Tom Willis, it is not hard to see why they are a complete nuisance at the breakdown.

Six of Wasps 18 tries from the first eight rounds have come from this type of possession and Gloucester will need to compete hard in this area if they are to come away from the Coventry Building Society Stadium with a sixth win in seven games against Wasps.

For the backline they have at their disposal, Gloucester should be much more of an attacking threat. The bare facts state that they have made the fewest passes, the fewest offloads, the least number of carries and fewest tackle breaks, and this can partly be explained by them having the slowest ruck speed of any of the 13 teams.

The Cherry & Whites rely heavily on their lineout as a source of tries so expect one or two of their forwards to rumble over but will it be enough against a side that has an All Black-esque quality of striking from anywhere at any time?

Gloucester score two-thirds of their points in the second half of matches and Wasp are running at over 50% so it stands to reason that the 19/20 Betway are offering on the second half being the highest-scoring half of the two is the logical bet.

The visitors are also a tasty 13/10 pick (Paddy Power and Unibet) to win the second half.

Wasps: 15 Ali Crossdale, 14 Zach Kibirige, 13 Josh Bassett, 12 Michael Le Bourgeois, 11 Marcus Watson, 10 Jacob Umaga, 9 Will Porter, 1 Robin Hislop, 2 Gabriel Oghre, 3 Jeffery Toomaga-Allen, 4 Vaea Fifita, 5 Elliott Stooke, 6 Brad Shields (c), 7 Thomas Young, 8 Tom Willis

Replacements: 16 Dan Frost, 17 Gordon Reid, 18 Elliot Millar-Mills, 19 Sebastian de Chaves, 20 Nizaam Carr, 21 Alfie Barbeary, 22 Francois Hougaard, 23 Jimmy Gopperth

Gloucester: 15. Kyle Moyle, 14. Ollie Thorley, 13. Billy Twelvetrees, 12. Mark Atkinson, 11. Jonny May, 10. Adam Hastings, 9. Ben Meehan, 1. Val Rapava-Ruskin, 2. Jack Singleton, 3. Kirill Gotovtsev, 4. Matias Alemanno, 5. Andrew Davidson, 6. Freddie Clarke, 7. Lewis Ludlow (c), 8. Jack Clement

Replacements: 16. Santiago Socino, 17. Jamal Ford-Robinson, 18. Fraser Balmain, 19. Freddie Thomas, 20. Jordy Reid, 21. Charlie Chapman, 22. Giorgi Kveseladze, 23. Lloyd Evans
