Heineken Champions Cup betting tips: Round of 16, first leg

The best rugby betting opportunity of the weekend would appear to be the Saturday tea-time kick-off between former champions, Exeter Chiefs and Munster.

Munster are a far cry from the team that was the envy of Europe 15-20 years ago and their season appears to be petering towards an unsatisfactory conclusion.

No respect to the current bunch, but they’re no match for the likes of Galwey, Flannery, O’Connell, O’Gara et al, and we don’t think they’ll be a match for the Chiefs at Sandy Park, even with a six-point handicap (10/11 Bet 365).

Being fourth in the Premiership means a lot more than being fifth in the URC – the current standings of the teams – and the Chiefs are starting to rebuild their Sandy Park fortress, with eight wins in the last 10 games there. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Munster have lost their last three away games on the bounce.

One longshot we think has potential is a double result of Sale/Bristol (11/1) in Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.

Sale have scored 8 of their 13 tries in the Heineken Champions Cup before the break so tend to start strongly, while Bristol will expect a big uplift from their bench at the AJ Bell Stadium.

With Charles Piutau, Semi Radradra and Harry Thacker sat in reserve on the bench, Bristol will fancy their chances of finishing strongly.
