Scotland won the last Five Nations Championship in 1999 but have never won the title since the competition was expanded to six teams the following year.

With the first win at Twickenham in 38 years behind them and three home games against Wales, Ireland and Italy to come, confidence is building that this could be their year, although a trip to Paris to play France in the penultimate round will be the ultimate test of their credentials.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Scotland coach Gregor Townsend did not try and downplay the significance of his side’s 11-6 win.

“I’m very aware of the history and I’ve come here as a player and a coach and not come away with anything so it’s got to be up there with our best ever result in our history.

“It’s certainly [the best] in my playing and coaching career. I still go back to three years ago at BT Murrayfield just because of the crowd, the atmosphere and the way the players played. Today they were outstanding too in really tricky conditions. I don’t know if that came out on the television but it was wet the whole game and really heavy rain in the second half.

“To win in these conditions, against very good side with the record they have here is a fantastic achievement for this group of players.

“You learn in defeats, you grow as a team in adversity, whether it’s at a World Cup, after a World Cup or before a World Cup that’s how you are shaped as a group of players and coaches.”
